But before that, you have to know something about tree services. In this post, we will discuss how to maintain an irregular shaped hedge.

We all have seen them, hedges grown like abstract or animal's shapes. As you might have guessed, they look impressive, but they aren't the most accessible shape types to get.

The best way to get an irregularly shaped hedge idea is to make a metal mesh that fits nicely around the bush or hedge. Set the frame on top of your hedge and then neatly cut around the mesh using your electric hedge trimmer or hand shears. Trimming will slowly train the bush or hedge to grow in the shape you want them.

Cutting Different Types of Hedge

Some hedges, like privet, hawthorn, conifers and box, are tall and best for achieving spirals and other towering topiary shapes. Like hornbeam and beech, others are slightly stockier, so they are more suited to smaller shapes.

The best option is usually the box for formal hedges. It has small leaves and thick growth, perfect for maintaining and shaping quickly. Informal hedges, like rhododendrons or hydrangeas, are much more difficult to shape. They have much larger leaves and some ideas of their own about how they want to sit. Though you are well suggested to prune them for maintenance, leave the peacock shapes to other hedge types.

Don't forget that most hedges favour being shaped or pruned during their dormant season. For flowering or fruiting hedges, which means after the fruit and flowers have gone. At the starting of spring, it is usually an excellent time to prun as it will give your hedge lots of time to fill out again over the summer.
